Dry needling for plantar fasciitis was developed to treat chronic plantar fasciitis or recalcitrant cases of plantar fasciitis. The procedure involves utilizing a local anesthetic to numb the area before the procedure is performed.
The procedure begins once the area is numb and involves perforating the plantar fascia with a needle multiple times under ultrasound guidance to verify proper placement. This releases platelets and other associated enzymes and growth factors to stimulate a healing cascade. The procedure has been associated with a 92% success rate.
Post Procedure Instructions:
1. For three weeks following the procedure, a cast boot must be worn while ambulating.
2. A night splint must be utilized for 2 months.
3. New prescription orthotics are essential to long-term success.
4. A home electrical nerve stimulation unit will be provided to utilize twice daily for 20 minutes at a time.
5. Gentle stretching is encouraged, especially with a device such as the Pro-Stretch (ask one of our medical assistants for details).
6. No icing or anti-inflammatories after the procedure, as this inhibits the inflammatory cascade which is essential to the healing process.
7. The first follow-up appointment will be at three weeks.
