A metatarsal stress fracture is a fracture that occurs in one or more metatarsals, or bones of the foot. They are normally caused by increasing exercise intensity, insufficient rest or improperly fitted shoewear. The stress on the foot becomes too much in these instances and tiny fractures can occur. Metatarsal stress fractures are most commonly seen in athletes such as gymnasts and ballet dancers, but can also be found in runners, patients with rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic bone disease and neuropatic conditions. Symptoms include: swelling, bruising or warmth of the foot; pain occuring with exercise and continuing at rest; localized pain at the site of the fracture; and tenderness of the foot. Treatment options vary but include physical therapy, recreational therapy and/or surgery.
